What to Wear to a Golf Tournament

We definitely know our golf game, and we know that dressing appropriately is crucial for comfort and enjoyment. When it comes to golf tournaments, high-end tournaments especially may require smart, modest dressing from players and spectators alike.
Don’t worry, though, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about what to wear to a golf tournament—from head to toe.
Players vs. Spectators
Players
Traditionally, all players must adhere to a dress code. The dress code helps maintain a certain level of decorum and respect for the game. Each golf course has different specifications for players, but the general guidelines for both men and women are:
- Collared shirts
- Tailored pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts
- Golf shoes with soft spikes
These rules are not binding, and each course may have different guidelines on dress code. If you’re playing, be sure to check what to wear ahead of time.
Spectators
For spectators, many of the same rules apply. Although spectators are not required to wear collared shirts, for example, golf is traditionally a restrained environment, so attire should reflect that atmosphere.
In general, avoid:
- Loud colors or patterns
- Denims
- Graphic tees
- Heels, or flip-flops
- Gym shorts
- Low-cut or exceedingly tight clothing
- Strapless garments
Instead, go for:
- Lightweight, comfortable fabrics, like cotton, rayon, or linen.
- Sportswear—especially golf wear—in moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Comfortable footwear, such as sandals or sneakers, especially if you plan on walking the course.
- Neutral colors, especially light colors.
- Various layering options, such as a cardigan, jacket, or scarf, in case the weather changes.
Imagine your perfect tournament and outfit.
Stylish, comfortable, and ready for the green—what more could you ask for?

Women
When considering what to wear to a golf tournament, women often opt for light, breezy, comfortable styles that are not overly casual. Some great options include:
- Sundresses
- Athletic dresses
- Skirts or skorts
- Capri pants or slacks
- Blouses
- Polo shirts
Additionally, lightweight makeup and hair styled off the neck and shoulders will keep you cooler and more comfortable in the long run.
Men
Men watching the game can stick to the basics, such as a collared golf shirt and a pair of golf pants. However, you can also wear:
- Polo shirts
- Shorts or khakis
- Short or long-sleeved Oxford button-downs
- Tennis shoes or loafers
Additionally, be sure to tuck in your shirt and wear a belt. To keep cool, many choose to wear lighter-colored clothing, such as white socks instead of black, blue, or brown. Additionally, don’t wear golf spikes if you’re a spectator.

Check Ahead
